To boost climate action and amplify the Solomon Islands' Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), communication officers, government representatives, and civil society stakeholders convened for a transformative Workshop on Strategic Communication for Climate Action, facilitated by the Regional Pacific NDC Hub on the 6th November.
Held at the Solomon Islands Climate Change Division, this one-day workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of communicators to deliver impactful climate messages, effectively engage diverse audiences, and harness digital tools to advocate for sustainable practices.
The workshop gathered key communication focal points, including representatives from the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO), Metrology Services, and the media, to explore strategies for crafting compelling narratives, building stronger media relationships, and using digital platforms to amplify climate action efforts.
Sosimo Narasia, Climate Change Communications Officer, praised the workshop for its hands-on approach: “It was a very interactive workshop; we were put in real-life situations where we had to think on the go. From social media to crisis communication, we had to consider our messaging and how to effectively reach our audience. I learned a lot today and cannot wait to implement this in my everyday work.”
Throughout the day, participants engaged in practical sessions on message development, media engagement, and social media strategy. The workshop also provided a platform for attendees to share challenges and success stories, fostering peer learning and cross-sectoral collaboration.
Jerry Hagaraia, Communications Officer at the NDMO, emphasized the collective responsibility of climate action: “Climate action is not just the responsibility of one agency or organization; it requires all of us to work together. Through initiatives like this workshop, we are not only enhancing our communication skills but also strengthening the networks needed to drive collective action. Media and government departments each play a critical role in raising awareness and inspiring change.”
The workshop highlighted the growing importance of innovative digital communication strategies in addressing the Solomon Islands' vulnerability to climate change. Utilizing online platforms to engage local communities, share success stories, and advocate for sustainable solutions is more critical than ever.
Participants left with enhanced skills in public speaking, message crafting, and social media management, along with strengthened networks among peers and media representatives. The Regional Pacific NDC Hub reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the Solomon Islands in achieving its climate goals and advancing the visibility of climate initiatives.
Administered by the Pacific Community (SPC) and implemented in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, and the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), the Hub exemplifies the power of partnerships in tackling global challenges.
The NDC Hub’s achievements are made possible by the generosity of its donors: the Australian Government, UK Aid, New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), the European Union, and Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Their support enables the Hub to mobilize expertise and resources to empower Pacific Island nations in building a sustainable and resilient future.
