“We have the responsibility to ensure that women and children’s voices are heard. We must speak for them, and we are sure that the Regional Pacific NDC Hub will help us push support for gender inclusivity”.
These were the sentiments of the Regional Pacific Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Hub Chair of the Steering Committee Debra Sungi at the Global Green Growth Week last month.
Speaking on 7-person panel for the Regional Pacific NDC Hub, Ms. Sungi said that with most of the Pacific being coastline communities, the NDC submissions by Pacific Island Countries are consequent of increasing impacts of climate change, especially the most vulnerable women and children.
‘All our NDCs have a great emphasis on gender & youths, we would like to further progress this in all PICs, and ensuring this is respected throughout implementation,” Sungi said.
The presentation by the panellists that included members of the NDC Hub, and Steering Committee and Implementation Staff showcased examples of the broad range of Pacific Island Countries’ NDC projects, demonstrating their steadfast commitment to climate action.
GGGI Country Representative for Fiji, Kiribati, Tonga and Vanuatu Daniel Munoz Smith said the mobilization of climate finance is crucial to support PIC’s continued NDC implementation.
“Under the 2030 strategy, the Hub is well placed to support countries’ NDC implementation and cooperation on gender & social inclusion is important and this needs to happen from the beggin and throughout implementation,” Munoz Smith said.
He added that it was inspiring to hear the ambitious work Pacific Island Countries are doing in implementing and enhancing their NDC’s.
The session that featured 7 panellists and more than 20 attendees highlighted the work of the Regional Pacific NDC Hub which was born at the 23rd Conference of the Parties as a vehicle to support Pacific Island Countries achieve their commitments under the Paris Agreement.
With over thirty country requests serviced by the NDC Hub and its implementing partners, GIZ Pacific, GGGI Pacific, Pacific-Community-SPC, and Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme - SPREP over the past two years, has now begun on its third phase in providing technical support for Pacific Island countries.
