Nadi, Fiji – August 2, 2024 — The Regional Pacific NDC Hub, in collaboration with the GIZ global project NDC Assist II and the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency, proudly announces the successful conclusion of the Article 6 Training held at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, Fiji. The training, which took place from July 31st to August 1st, 2024, brought together over 50 participants from across the Pacific region, marking a significant milestone in building the region’s capacity to engage with international carbon markets under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
The comprehensive training program was designed to equip public officials and private sector stakeholders with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively participate in Article 6 mechanisms, which are crucial for attracting international climate finance and achieving Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The event featured a mix of technical sessions, interactive discussions, and hands-on workshops, tailored to the unique needs and contexts of the Pacific Island States.
"The success of this training underscores the commitment of Pacific Island States to enhance their climate action and leverage international market mechanisms for sustainable development," said Iris Cordelia Rotzoll, Project Manager, Regional Pacific NDC Hub. "The active participation and enthusiasm of all attendees reflect our collective dedication to driving meaningful climate action in the region."
Key highlights of the training included in-depth technical sessions where participants gained a thorough understanding of the Paris Agreement context, the specifics of Article 6.2 and 6.4 mechanisms, and the requirements for becoming Article 6 ready as host countries.
Also, attendees engaged in small-group discussions, developing strategies to make their countries attractive for Article 6 projects and identifying capacity-building needs for different institutions.
Furthermore, the training culminated in the creation of country-specific roadmaps for Article 6 mechanisms implementation, providing a clear and actionable plan for each participant to follow.
"We are particularly proud of the collaborative spirit that defined this training," added Chris Mong, FAO, Papua New Guinea. "The exchange of experiences and insights among participants has laid a strong foundation for regional cooperation and peer learning, which are vital for the successful implementation of Article 6 mechanisms."
Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the relevance and practicality of the sessions. "The training provided us with valuable tools and insights that are directly applicable to our national contexts," said Ranjila Singh, Climate Mitigation Specialist, Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. "We are now better equipped to navigate the complexities of Article 6 and integrate these mechanisms into our climate strategies."
Moving forward, the Regional Pacific NDC Hub, GIZ, and the Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency remain committed to supporting Pacific Island States in their climate action endeavors. Further initiatives and follow-up activities are planned to continue building capacity and fostering regional collaboration.
