Tonga’s Second Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) emphasizes the importance of establishing a robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) system for the Agriculture, Forests, and Other Land Use (AFOLU) sector. In response to this commitment, the Government of Tonga requested support from the Regional Pacific NDC Hub as part of a Phase 3 call. The Department of Climate Change, in partnership with the Regional Pacific NDC Hub, facilitated a validation workshop to enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of the MRV system, building stakeholder capacity, and providing actionable feedback for continuous improvement.
The workshop gathered representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture Division, Livestock Division, Forestry Division, Tonga Statistics Department (TSD), farmer representatives, NGOs, and private sector stakeholders. It focused on rigorously assessing the accuracy and effectiveness of the MRV system, ensuring robust data collection, management, and greenhouse gas (GHG) calculation methodologies. Additionally, the event served as a platform to boost stakeholders' skills and knowledge, equipping them with the necessary tools to navigate and streamline MRV processes. Stakeholders provided valuable insights and actionable recommendations to further refine and improve the MRV system.
This capacity building will strengthen Tonga's ability to attract international support and funding for climate action and empower local stakeholders with the tools needed to make informed decisions for sustainable land use practices.
