FSM Tourism NDC Action Plan

Country: Federated States of Micronesia

Phase: 3

Status: Completed

Related Strategic Priority Outcomes: Strengthened enabling environment for NDC implementation

Summary of Activity:

The objective is to establish a series of prioritized objectives and actions to mitigate GHG emissions in the tourism sector in an effective and efficient manner while promoting sustainable tourism practices.

FSM submitted its updated NDC in 2022 and it is highlighted by the ambitious target to increase electricity access to 100% of the population by 2030 while ensuring that 80% of it is sourced from renewable sources. The achievement of these targets will be largely driven by the transition of the electricity generation in the country to renewable sources and implementation of energy efficiency measures. In addition, FSM has signed onto the Glasgow Declaration which is call to accelerate climate action in the tourism sector.

The plan is developed based on an extensive bottom-up approach from tourism stakeholders across the 4 States of FSM, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. The plan will utilize stakeholder consultations findings as the basis for identifying key actions to help mitigate GHGs, transition to renewable energy and promote sustainable tourism practices in the tourism sector.

Six actions have been identified through the plan and will be implemented by different divisions of the FSM government including the tourism, energy and climate change divisions. The plan will compliment existing projects across being implemented in the country to transition to renewable energy while enhancing inter ministerial coordination and collaboration at the National government level.
