In a resounding call for inclusivity and collaboration, Sagaitu Konusi, the GIZ Mitigation Advisor, emphasized the critical role of inclusive consultation in the formulation of effective policies. Konusi's words came to light during a series of workshops with tourism stakeholders in Yap, as part of the process to develop the Federated States of Micronesia's (FSM) National Determined Contributions (NDC) Tourism Action Plan (TAP).
The development of the FSM NDC Tourism Action Plan marks a significant milestone in the country's commitment to mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable tourism practices. This plan will establish a set of prioritized objectives and actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the tourism sector, all while ensuring the sector's growth remains effective, efficient, and sustainable.
Konusi, who is spearheading the consultations, reiterated the importance of engaging a diverse spectrum of stakeholders from across the tourism sector, including government, private sector, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), civil society, and local communities. She stressed that an inclusive, integrated, and bottom-up approach is essential for the development of this vital document.
"Inclusive consultation is key in the formulation of effective policies that reflect the reality of things on the ground. Government, private sector, NGOs, civil society, and local communities all play a role in effective policymaking, and this is reflected in our approach to the formulation of the FSM NDC Tourism Action Plan," said Konusi.
The FSM NDC Tourism Action Plan holds significance not only for the tourism sector but also for the broader FSM economy. It will lay down a clear pathway towards the decarbonization of the tourism sector, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
Key stakeholders from various sectors are actively participating in these consultations, ensuring that their valuable insights and perspectives are integrated into the plan. This collaborative effort underscores FSM's commitment to addressing the urgent challenges of climate change while fostering sustainable tourism practices.
The FSM NDC Tourism Action Plan is set to become a shining example of how diverse stakeholders can come together to shape policies that not only reduce emissions but also support economic growth and sustainability. The FSM government remains dedicated to working hand in hand with its partners to make the tourism sector a model of sustainability in the Pacific region.
