The Fiji Climate Change division, in collaboration with the Regional Pacific NDC Hub and Bankers Without Boundaries, has made significant strides in addressing climate change with the success of their recent consultation workshop on Fiji’s draft Climate Risk Disclosure Guidelines.
The workshop, hailed as a resounding success, gathered a diverse array of stakeholders within the financial sector to provide feedback on the pioneering guidelines, marking a significant milestone for the Pacific region. Through a dynamic Talanoa Panel styled dialogue and engaging group exchanges, participants delved deep into discussions, sharing insights and perspectives aimed at shaping the future of climate resilience in Fiji.
"The workshop represented a pivotal moment in Fiji's efforts to address climate change," remarked Filimone Tuivanualevu, Acting Director of the Fiji Climate Change division. "By fostering collaboration and dialogue, we are not only laying the groundwork for effective climate risk disclosures but also empowering our communities and businesses to adapt and thrive in the face of climate challenges."
Fiji's proactive approach to climate risk disclosure is in line with the country's commitment to the Fiji Climate Change Act 2021, which outlines requirements for such disclosures. These efforts aim to increase awareness of the impacts of climate change on Fiji’s private sector and economy, driving greater efforts to assess and address climate risks.
"The guidelines developed through this workshop will serve as a crucial tool for businesses and financial institutions in Fiji," stated William Watts, Bankers Without Boundaries. "By incorporating climate risk disclosures into their decision-making processes, they can not only mitigate risks but also seize opportunities for sustainable growth."
Moving forward, the feedback gathered from the workshop will inform the next steps in the development of the guidelines, ensuring they are robust, effective, and tailored to the needs of Fiji's unique context.
"The success of this workshop underscores the importance of collaboration and collective action in addressing climate change," emphasized His Excellency Dr Andreas Prothmann, German Ambassador to Fiji. "By working together, we can build a more resilient and sustainable future for Fiji and the entire Pacific region."
